Sept 15, 2021
WHEREAS COVID–19 (SARS–CoV–2), a novel coronavirus, is a deadly illness caused by a virus that can transmit from person to person;
WHEREAS in 2020, COVID–19 began to spread throughout the world, creating a global pandemic that has had a catastrophic impact on human life, communities in the United States, and the United States economy;
WHEREAS by September 15, 2021, there had been at least 41,262,574 known cases of the virus in the United States, including 1,095,200 in the State of Michigan and 293,048 in Oakland and Wayne counties;
WHEREAS by September 15, 2021, COVID-19 has killed at least 660,380 Americans, including 21,854 Michiganders and 7,864 in Oakland and Wayne counties;
WHEREAS COVID–19 has had a disproportionate effect on low-income communities and communities of color, such as Detroit, with higher rates of infection and death, exacerbating inequities already prevalent in our systems;
WHEREAS public servants, frontline and essential workers, and health care professionals took selfless actions to protect their neighbors and communities, support struggling local economies, and find innovative ways to provide services;
WHEREAS the prior presidential administration’s response to the impending and continued COVID-19 pandemic was slow, clouded by disinformation, and wholly ineffective in controlling the rate of viral transmission in the United States;
WHEREAS the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is a trusted American institution that has worked diligently for more than 75 years to protect our country from health, safety, and security threats, both foreign and in the United States;
WHEREAS Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, is the nation’s foremost infectious disease specialist and a dedicated public servant who has advised seven presidents on HIV/AIDS and many other domestic and global health issues;
WHEREAS COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective and can prevent severe illness and death;
WHEREAS by September 15, 2021, 54 percent of Americans have made the wise choice to become fully vaccinated, yet nearly one in five U.S. adults say they would not agree to be vaccinated if a COVID-19 vaccine were immediately available to them and they are unlikely to change their mind about it.
WHEREAS Joseph R. Biden was sworn in as the 46th president of the United States on January 20, 2021;
WHEREAS President Biden announced on March 25, 2021, an ambitious goal of delivering 200 million vaccinations in the subsequent 100 days and hit that goal with one week to spare;
WHEREAS President Biden announced on September 9, 2021, an ambitious six-pronged national strategy that ensures the United States is using every available tool to combat COVID-19 and save more lives in the months ahead, while also keeping schools open and safe, and protecting our economy from lockdowns and damage;
WHEREAS President Biden’s bold plan—grounded in science and informed by experts—offers a path out of the pandemic by vaccinating the unvaccinated, further protecting the vaccinated, keeping schools safely open, increasing testing, and required masking, protecting our economic recovery, and improving care for those with COVID-19;
WHEREAS a recent Axios/Ipsos survey found that 60% of Americans support the federal government implementing President Biden’s new policy of requiring the COVID-19 vaccines for federal employees and businesses with 100 or more workers;
WHEREAS a recent Gallup poll shows Americans have become increasingly supportive of requiring proof of vaccination to participate in certain public activities, including majorities who favor such mandates to travel by airplane (61%), stay in a hotel (53%), attend events with large crowds (58%), dine in a restaurant (53%), and go to work (56%);
WHEREAS we must not allow a vocal minority that peddles misinformation, scare tactics, and pseudoscience to sway policy decisions that must be based on real science, peer-reviewed research, and the guidance of public health experts and medical professionals;
WHEREAS every American has the responsibility to their community and their country to take proven actions backed by science to combat the spread of COVID-19;
WHEREAS we as individuals and as a larger society must act with the utmost urgency to curb transmission in our communities, especially as the more infectious SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant continues to spread, leading to increased cases and hospitalizations;
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, the Northville Democratic Club Executive Board wholeheartedly supports President Biden’s COVID-19 Action Plan to protect our communities and hasten the end of the pandemic.
