"Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek." Barack Obama
Remember when candidate Barack Obama said those words? He promised us ‘hope and change’ as we faced the Great Recession, and he delivered. In eight years President Obama, with the support of Vice President Joe Biden, brought us health care, jobs and successfully stopped Ebola from spreading throughout the world.
Now, as we face even greater issues, like social injustice, public health and economic crises, and rampant racism, the words of President Obama still ring true:
“We are the change that we seek."
In this crisis, it’s more important than ever to remember that democracy is a liberal value. We know what that looks like because the Obama administration was based on inclusion of all, access for all, and universal engagement. He brought America back from the Great Recession and brought us world-wide successes. Voters put Obama in office twice and voters saved our democracy. This November, we will save our democracy again. We will vote like our lives and our democracy depend on it. Because they do.
We are the change….. we will do it again. We will give people something to vote for by defining and highlighting our liberal value frames. We will remind people that voting for Vice President Biden is voting for our liberal values, because he is a man with great empathy – he cares about us.
Donald Trump taught us that we can’t take democracy for granted. Many of our institutions are not protected by law, but require the good faith of our politicians. It’s up to us to vote for people with liberal values – who believe in democracy and will uphold the constitution.
Together, we will save our democracy and elect Joe Biden for President, as well as Democrats up and down the ticket. We will frame the conversation based on our liberal values. We are the change we have been waiting for.
